Why is it important for me to have a good credit history?
Essentially, a good credit history enables you to obtain a fair amount of credit on reasonable terms. When you approach a lender to ask for credit-whether it be a bank loan, a credit card, or a mortgage-that lender wants to be sure that you are a good credit risk. To be sure of that, the lender looks at two main factors:

1. Will it be possible for you to make the expected payments on the loan or credit card? That is, do you have a steady income? How much debt do you have in comparison to your income? Do you already have so many monthly payments that you can't afford to make another one?
2. Do you have a history of paying your debts in a timely manner? That is, are there bills you have failed to pay? Are there any court judgments against you for non-payment? Do you tend to pay your bills late and if so, how late?

If the lender finds information on your credit report that is negative, it may cause you either to be denied credit or to receive credit on less favorable terms (i.e., a higher interest rate or a smaller loan). For example, if a bank shows that you owe more money on a car loan than you actually do, that misinformation may prevent you from getting a loan. If a credit card company has mistakenly reported that you've made late payments, you may have to pay higher interest rates because you will be considered "high risk."

Is it possible to repair bad credit?
Yes it is, if you are willing to spend just a little time and effort. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, both consumer reporting agencies and companies reporting information, such as banks and credit card companies, are required to correct inaccurate or incomplete information in your credit report. That means if you find information you believe to be wrong in your report, you have the legal right to have it removed. We show you how.

What if deleted items reappear on my credit report?
If an item is changed or removed from your credit report, the consumer reporting agency cannot put the disputed information back into your report unless the creditor who originally reported it verifies that it is correct. If this does happen, and the CRA puts the item back on your report, it must provide you with a written notice that includes the name, address, and phone number of the creditor who verified and reported the information.

Does paying off collections or charged off accounts repair my credit automatically?
Unfortunately, no. Negative information can stay on your credit report for up to seven years, even if you pay off and close an account. Only taking action to repair your credit will ensure the removal of erroneous and negative information from your credit report.

How do errors get into my credit report?
Most of the time, errors in your report are due to incorrect or unfair reporting practices on the part of creditors. These practices can take many forms. For example, you may have medical bills that are the responsibility of your insurance carrier. If your insurance carrier disputes a claim or is slow to pay, however, the medical provider may turn your bill over to a collection agency, which in turn reports it to a CRA. Even if the insurance company eventually pays the bill, the delinquency will still show up on your credit report. In other cases, utility, phone, and cable companies may continue to bill you for service even after you've moved from a location. If you are unaware that you are still being billed, you naturally will fail to make payments, and that, will show up as a black mark on your credit report. Additionally, creditors may enter incorrect payment dates into your account, attribute someone else's delinquency to you, or post your payments to the account of another customer with a similar name. Remember, all the payment information on all your accounts is completely subject to human error.
